About Carlo Thomas Vocal Coach
Maintaining a Sarasota, Florida, studio since 2002, vocal coach Carlo Thomas has decades of experience in the performing arts, spanning a number of Broadway and Off Broadway productions. In addition to his work as a vocal coach, he is currently preparing the show Off His Trolly, which recounts personal experiences working with the noted composers Timothy Gray and Hugh Martin. Known for adaptability, Carlo Thomas has worked in a number of languages, from Italian to Hebrew, throughout the course of his career. A natural bass, his work as a vocal technician has involved assisting students of diverse vocal ranges.
Carlo Thomas earned his BA in dramatic arts at East Stroudsburg University in the early 1970s. As a member of the Stroudsburg Players, he performed in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and Waiting for Godot. He subsequently received Sullivan Foundation grants that furthered his career aspirations. The gifted vocal technician’s repertoire includes Where’s Charley, Christmas Rappings, 1776, and The Phantom of the Opera, as well as operatic productions such as Madame Butterfly, La Bohème, Boris Godunov, and The Barber of Seville.
Noted director Hal Prince said of Mr. Thomas, who performed in Mr. Prince’s production of The Phantom of the Opera, “He is an excellent singer and a reliable and creative performer.” The San Francisco Chronicle commented on his performance in The Barber of Seville, saying, “A marvelous buffoon virtually stole the show, notably the booming basso of Carlo Thomas as Don Basilio.”
